From SnOwy - Ed's Wiki Notebook
Why have a blog?
- Sharing scientific and technical information
- Faster than publications -- demonstrate progress without exposing details
- Able to discuss non-novel but highly interesting information such as implementation details and micro optimizations
- Can demonstrate interests without being an expert in the given blog entry
- Can ask the entire internet for help -- powerful!
- Permanent page feature allows discussion and sharing of courseware, software, CVs etc.,
- Is a highly searchable platform -- allows you to find what you wrote quickly!
- Professional web presence "momentum" (balances out my generation's Facebook misdemeanors :P)
Example "demonstrate progress without exposing details" blog posts
- Using a "request wall" allows me to decide individually, who to show details to.
Example "non-novel but highly interesting" blog posts
- In Bioinformatics
- In Computer Science
Example "interest without being an expert" blog posts
- Here, I was describing several chess variants
Example "asking the entire internet for help" blog posts
- Here, I was looking for a search tool.
Example permanent pages
- My Python Crash Course Page
- My CS683 Assignment Hints from Dr. Burkowski's course -- I had permission to do this :D
- And of course, the CV
Why have a wiki?
- Sharing information
- Quick to create pages
- Searchability
- Create, Modify, Access anywhere on the web
Keeping class notes for yourself and your class mates
- An example of one of the more well-groomed page of notes from Dan Brown's CS798 course
Keeping notes from a group meeting :P to share with the group
- Owen's recent group meeting
Keeping loose notes while working on a project
- Notes for the CS798 final project
What about non-browser web based technologies?
- SVN for versionning software and papers
- SSH to delegate tasks to your server
- e.g. Perform a backup of my projects without me needing to connect my laptop to an external HDD
- VNC to delegate tasks to your server
- e.g. Perform this lengthy download so I don't have to leave my laptop on
Appendix -- some web based software and outputs I've created
- jSintegrase 0.01
- SignUp for PyCrashCourse
- fsMSA Triplet Module -- Project Milestone 1 of 3
- fsMSA PhyloTree Triplet Analysis Output -- Project Milestone 2 of 3
Demo Data for fsMSA Triplet Module CGI
- used with the early implementation of the singleton self-local evaluator

Appendix -- Using Skype as a Dropbox
- Configuring a Skype account on your server to auto-accept files from only you ...
- so that the files end up in a drop box lets you quickly post files.
- e.g. Post my Darwin-looking page of notes from my previous group meeting ...
