EWB: Matthew Gingerich -- an e-mail clipping follows ...

I think my name was mentioned in close proximity with EWB at some point, but I don't think I was the friend-maker you're talking about, Eddie. On the other hand, now that I think about it, I think there was something about me being supposed to talk to them about iGEM ideas. Um.

Mostly, EWB focuses on two things: raising awareness about various global social issues (one of they're recent campaigns was promoting microloans) and sending co-op volunteers to developing countries. Out of the two guys I knew who had EWB co-op terms, one of them was working largely on computer stuff (described in more detail on his blog) and the other one was working on rural water infrastructure, which is possibly of more interest. His blog has just been replaced by GoDaddy domain name squatting, but I've salvaged one of the more relevant posts about his work from the Google cache (attached). Both of those guys also got malaria during their terms, so if you're feeling ambitious, there's a biology problem for you. My sister also had a similar work term running an orphanage for the red cross in Guyana, but I don't think she found much biology-related about the job (she was actually a bio major, so I think she eventually went with a hand waving work report about AIDS).

Having said all that, what do you want with EWB? Is this part of some recruitment / marketing venture? If so, I can definitely introduce you to the right people in the Waterloo chapter.

Matt
