From SnOwy - Ed's Wiki Notebook
Symptoms
- Zinc may hang and not crash remaining in this state until discovered and hard reset
- A line containing npvhash finally appeared in the console -- it is shown below
10-09-17 0917.07:16:45 kernel npvhash=4095
- This line did not appear previously -- perhaps the hang occurs before this in cases before this date
Intelligence
- Forum posts such as http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1442741 are unhelpful because of the vagueness of the diagnostic line
- Explanations vary from damaged system fonts to internal hard drives flaking out.
- The npvhash line has been described as a normal occurrence during system start up -- this is consistent with my log, the 7:16 timestamp is startup time, not crash time...

Hypotheses
- Is this due to the new daisy chained firewire HDD?
- These crashes never occurred before the new HDD was attached -- what if we reversed the arrangement of the cables?
